چکیده

Stereotactic apparatus to guide surgical devices started being researched in 1908, yet today’s neurosurgery still rely on stereotactic frames developed almost half a century ago. Robots excel at handling spatial information and thus are an obvious candidate for guiding instrumentation along precisely planned trajectories. In this review, we introduce the concept of stereotaxy and we then describe standard Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) surgery. Neurosurgeons’ expectations and demands about the role of robots as assistive tools are also addressed. We listed and critically reviewed the most successful robotic systems developed specifically or enabled for keyhole transcranial stereotactic neurosurgery. A comprehensive summary details the strengths and drawbacks of each robotic system, emphasising the differences between them. Finally, a critical analysis is made about the listed robotic systems’ common and distinct features, and whether they are considered advantages or not. Some essential yet not so obvious characteristics of these systems are also described, along with future perspectives. In the end, all robotic systems follow a very similar and structured workflow despite the technical differences that set them apart. No system unequivocally stands out as an absolute best. Technological progress trend is pointing towards the development of miniaturised, cost-effective solutions with more intuitive interfaces.

Enhanced markerless surgical robotic guidance system for keyhole neurosurgery

Image-based surgical techniques can support minimally invasive keyhole neurosurgery through the segmentation of computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging, optimal surgical planning, and surgical guidance. Keyhole neurosurgery requires automatic surgical planning and accuracy guidance for a target of the non-invasive or minimally invasive treatment of an anatomical structure. For support...

Stereotactic Radiosurgery in the Treatment of Glioblastoma Multiforme: Current Status of Technology and Potential Role of Microbeam Radiosurgery

Stereotactic radiosurgery is an emerging treatment option offered to patients with glioblastoma (GB). Radiosurgery is performed as an outpatient procedure and provides a safe and effective non-invasive treatment for focal GB. High-energy beams originating from cobalt sources placed into a helmet-shaped device (Gamma Knife®, Elekta) or generated by a linear accelerator (LINAC), rotating on a gan...

Frameless robotic stereotactic biopsies: a consecutive series of 100 cases.

OBJECT Stereotactic biopsy procedures are an everyday part of neurosurgery. The procedure provides an accurate histological diagnosis with the least possible morbidity. Robotic stereotactic biopsy needs to be an accurate, safe, frameless, and rapid technique. This article reports the clinical results of a series of 100 frameless robotic biopsies using a Medtech ROSA device. METHODS The author...
